Tensions concerning territorial disputes between China and Japan over the Diaoyu Islands rose to a new level when Japanese authorities illegally arrested 14 Chinese activists who had landed on one of the islands. The activists were released after the Chinese government repeatedly demanded their “immediate and unconditional” release, yet the tensions may not reduce just yet unless Japan changes its stance on the issue.

Shintaro Ishihara (石原慎太郎), governor of Tokyo, proposed that Japan “buy” the Diaoyu Islands in April. Ishihara and other right-wing politicians have attempted to use the Diaoyu Islands issue as a tool to win support in future elections, said Liu Jiangyong, an expert on Japanese studies from Tsinghua University.

Analysts have warned that Tokyo’s stance on the Diaoyu Islands issue could trigger nationalism in Japan and win seats for more right-wing politicians in the Japanese parliament, which will eventually harm China-Japan ties.

The Diaoyu islands, in the East China Sea between China and Japan, have belonged to China since ancient times.

The islands are 120 nautical miles northeast of China’s Taiwan province, 200 nautical miles west of China’s mainland and 200 nautical miles east of Japan’s southernmost island Okinawa (冲绳).

Geologically, the islands are attached to Taiwan. The waters around the islands are 100 to 150 meters deep and there is a 2,000-meter-deep oceanic trench between the islands and Okinawa.

Fishermen from China’s Taiwan and Fujian and other provinces have been conducting activities such as fishing and collecting herbs in this area since ancient times.

The islands appeared on China’s map since the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644). And there are records about the islands in a book published during the rule of Yong Le (1403-1424) in the Ming Dynasty, more than 400 years before Japan claimed discovery of the Diaoyu islands in 1884.

After the Ming Dynasty, the islands were recorded in many historical documents.

In fact, on a map published by Japan between 1783 and 1785, marking the boundary of the Ryukyu Kingdom, the Diaoyu islands were shown as part of China.

China’s Foreign Ministry has reiterated that China holds a firm stance over the Diaoyu Islands. 钓鱼岛事件英语作文,www.kgf8.com高考网提供。
